Colin Callender, one of the producers of the previously announced play based on Harry’s early life with the Dursleys, recently discussed the focus of the play and how he convinced J.K. Rowling to bring the “Harry Potter” franchise to the stage.

Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) has written a play titled “Peddling,” based on a childhood experience involving a homeless boy, which will premiere at a certain festival in Suffolk, early this year. Afterwards the play will then transfer to another festival in New York City for a few weeks. Melling is said to have based the play on an experience that saw him encounter a homeless person.
I have to admit that when I heard the news of a potential Harry Potter stage show about Harry’s childhood with the Dursleys I was not very excited, which in turn made me feel really disappointed. As a longtime Potter fan, I wanted to be excited about the possibility of getting more from the wizarding world, but the idea of seeing more of Harry’s childhood held little interest for me. In fact, the more I consider it the more upset I become with the idea of Harry’s upbringing, and I’ve begun to wonder who should be held accountable for allowing him to live in such poor physical and emotional conditions.
I know the title of this article is “What if Harry had said no,” but let’s start off with “What if J.K. Rowling had said no?” What if the idea for Harry Potter popped into her brain, and she said “no” to writing the story of the Boy Who Lived?
Harry Melling, more well known to Harry Potter fans as Dudley Dursley, Harry’s unpleasant cousin, has spoken recently about his blossoming stage career since Potter. He has appeared on the West End already, in Mother Courage and Her Children, where his stage mother was once again Fiona Shaw, and The Hothouse, a Harold Pinter play.
