Dame Maggie Smith Recites a Holiday Classic with Prince Charles, and “Cursed Child” Cast Brings Holiday Spirit

You can always expect the Harry Potter family to deliver when it comes to the holidays.

Members of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child casts from around the world joined together to spread holiday cheer, and Dame Maggie Smith participated in a special Christmas reading with Prince Charles to support the Actors’ Benevolent Fund. These two contributions are just what we needed for the 2020–2021 holiday season.

First, the Cursed Child casts from Hamburg, London, New York, and San Francisco made a collaborative Harry Potter-themed “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Give it a whirl and sing along if you must.

Twelve owls a-hooting
Eleven portraits prattling
Ten times a-turning
Nine Dementors swooping
Eight ghosts a-gliding
Seven Weasleys squabbling
Six brooms a-flying
Five Golden Snitches
Four Chocolate Frogs
Three Potter kids
Two best friends
And a lovely pumpkin pasty

Then, the lovely Maggie Smith joined Prince Charles, along with other fellow actors, in a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” This reading benefits the Actors’ Benevolent Fund, a charity that supports actors in their time of need when they are unable to work, mostly due this year to the coronavirus. Other actors who joined in the reading include Tom Hardy, Dame Judi Dench, Daniel Craig, and Joanna Lumley.

You can’t help but feel Christmas cheer when you hear a holiday tune with a magical take and the familiar story of St. Nick with twinkling lit trees in the background.

I grew alongside Harry since I was 12 years old. It is such a treat to be a part of the best book club any Harry Potter fan could ask for. I graduated in 2016 with a Creative Writing degree and since then I have been doing freelance writing on the side. Outside of the literary world, I love the outdoors, hiking, and binge-watching Parks and Rec for the billionth time.
