Top Five Romantic “Harry Potter” Gestures

The Harry Potter series is filled with exciting and scary sequences, but even with all that going on, the characters still manage to show their loved ones how much they care for them. This Valentine’s Day, I look at my top five romantic gestures from the series.

1. Ron vs. Malfoy

‘Who was he [Ron] tryin’ ter curse?’
‘Malfoy called Hermione something — it must’ve been really bad, because everyone went wild.’
‘It was bad,’ said Ron hoarsely, emerging over the tabletop looking pale and sweaty. ‘Malfoy called her ‘Mudblood,’ Hagrid —’” (CoS 115)

Although Ron was very young at the time, his decision to stand up for his friend shows how much he cares for her. Unfortunately, his actions led to him throwing up slugs for a while, but the gesture showed the depth of his feelings for her.

2. Confunded Cormac

‘If you ask me,’ said Harry quietly, ‘McLaggen looks like he was Confunded this morning. And he was standing right in front of where you were sitting.’
Hermione blushed.
‘Oh, all right then, I did it,’ she whispered. ‘But you should have heard the way he was talking about Ron and Ginny!’” (HBP 232)

Hermione, just like Ron, jinxed someone to protect her friends. Though she’s normally rule-abiding, her actions demonstrate her loyalty to those closest to her.

2. Fleur’s Acceptance of Bill’s Scars

‘You thought I would not weesh to marry him? Or per’aps, you hoped?’ said Fleur, her nostrils flaring. ‘What do I care how he looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk! All these scars show is zat my husband is brave!’” (HBP 623)

Even though they are not one of the more prominent couples, their love really shines through. After Bill’s attack, Fleur’s love for her fiancé is incredibly apparent when she stands firmly by Bill’s side no matter what he might look like.

4. Hermione and Ron’s First Kiss

‘No,’ said Ron seriously, ‘I mean we should tell them [the house-elves] to get out. We don’t want any more Dobbies, do we? We can’t order them to die for us —‘
There was a clatter as the basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione’s arms. Running at Ron, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet.” (DH 625)

Ron’s change in attitude concerning house-elves shows how much he has grown over the series. He went from an immature child to a thoughtful hero. The moment he thinks about the house-elves, creatures Hermione had campaigned for, made their first kiss extremely romantic.

5. James’s Sacrifice

Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!” (DH 343)

Although they might not have had the smoothest beginning, they grew to mature and love each other. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a long marriage, but from the brief insight we have, we know they loved each other. After all, James was willing to sacrifice himself to protect Harry and Lily, which is an incredibly powerful gesture of love.
