Hansons Auctioneers Will Host the First Auction Dedicated to “Harry Potter”
We’ve seen many Harry Potter books sold at auction, and now Hansons Auctioneers’ book expert, Jim Spencer, has created an entire auction just for Potter-themed memorabilia and rare, first-edition books. The auction is online-only and will take place at 2 p.m. GMT on May 5. This is the first auction of its kind, and we can’t wait for it!
Jim Spencer has built a reputation for finding first-edition hardback copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone; in fact, he’s found 13 of these limited editions in just 21 months. Five of the thirteen he’s found will be featured in the upcoming auction, alongside several of his other exciting finds. Spencer explained that he’s been “responding to hundreds of enquiries every single week from all over the globe” since his first find back in 2019, describing the process as “like panning for gold.”
Spencer’s latest finds include five first-issue hardbacks of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which all have guide prices of between £10,000 and £50,000, as well as five paperback copies of the book. Alongside these rare discoveries are a Bloomsbury proof cover design, dating from June 1997, taxidermy specimens of the lizards and snakes used in the first Harry Potter film, and two first-edition copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, signed by several members of the cast – including Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). Some of the lots include personal messages, such as a note from Radcliffe reminding us all that “magic rocks.”
Some of the items for sale have touching tales in their past. A first-edition copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has a story of a meeting in a café when a young girl gave J.K. Rowling a card that she had made. The card had a mermaid on the front, and this copy now includes a personalized message, commenting on the use of mermaids in the fourth book, which wouldn’t be released for another year. Another lot with a tale to tell is a first-edition copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, although this one is slightly less wholesome. This copy was in fact stolen two weeks before it was supposed to be released and was used to attempt to blackmail Bloomsbury, and people tried to obtain money by revealing the book’s secrets to newspapers.
