USQ Fall Regional Championships Over, Spring Regional Championships Close
US Quidditch (USQ) is holding Muggle quidditch tournaments again because it’s time for the Spring Regional Championships.
In February, there will be three USQ Regional Championships. The first one is the South Regional Championship, which will be held on February 12–13 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The second one, the Southwest Regional Championship, will be held on February 19–20 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The last one is the West Regional Championship, which will be held on February 26–27 in Tucson, Arizona.
The regional championships hosted by USQ are part of the qualification process for teams who want to play in the USQ Cup. In the 2021–22 season, there were already a few regional championships in fall 2021. Maryland Quidditch won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in October and along with Virginia Tech and the Virginia Quidditch Club, got the first bids at the 2022 USQ Cup.
The Northeast Regional Championship (NERC) should have been held after that, but this tournament was canceled due to bad weather. USQ decided to count the “attend one regionals” requirement for the college and club division teams that were fully registered and scheduled to attend the tournament before it was canceled. For NERC, this applies to twelve collegiate and six club division teams. All nationals bids allocated to NERC have been reallocated to the at-large pool. For earning at-large bids, teams need to fulfill requirements such as playing at two official events, in seven official games, and against four different opponents.
The last regional championship, the Great Lakes Regional Championship, was held on November 6–7, 2021, in West Chester, Ohio. Fifteen collegiate teams participated, and seven of them qualified for the USQ Cup: Creighton Quidditch, Michigan Quidditch Team, Blue Jay Quidditch, Quidditch Club of Pittsburgh, Michigan State Quidditch, and Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch.
One of them, Creighton Quidditch, had already won a regional championship this season. As previously announced, the Midwest Regional Championship was a small tournament on October 30, 2021, in Papillion, Nebraska, with only five collegiate teams attending. Creighton Quidditch became the champions there and qualified for the USQ Cup along with Mizzou Club Quidditch and Kansas Quidditch.
