“Our Journey Has Only Just Begun”: Thank You and Goodbye to the Original “Cursed Child” Cast

by Sophie Reid · May 21, 2017

It’s the end of the road for our original Harry Potter and the Cursed Child cast. Can you believe that a whole year has passed since Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni, and Paul Thornley first stepped onto the stage as our beloved trio and Anthony Boyle and Sam Clemmett stole hearts with their portrayal of Scorpius and Albus?

The cast gave us another opportunity to reconnect and fall in love with old friends again and a chance to get to know and fall in love with new ones.

It's the Harry Potter Original Cast countdown! After 15 months on 1 of the best gigs ever … 1. Week. Left. *gulp* #CursedChild @HPPlayLDN

But all good things come to an end, as we Potter fans know, and so the time has come to say goodbye to our original Cursed Child cast. As Potter fans, we’re used to saying goodbye; we’ve done it before – many times – but this is the first time that we’ve seen others step into the shoes of characters and performers we already know and love. That’s the nature of theater.

Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I'll miss you
Until we meet again!

No matter what you might think of Cursed Child, it’s always sad when it’s time to say goodbye. It’s certainly been an exciting year for Potter fans, with two new stories set in the wizarding world to devour (the other, of course, being Fantastic Beasts), and the number of people who have flocked to the theater to see Cursed Child on stage has been a testament to the fandom’s dedication.

Since putting on their robes and picking up their wands, the cast has been spun into the whirlwind that is the Potter fan base, picking up awards for their portrayals and generally being accepted into the hearts of the fandom.

Thankyou if you captured this little afro puffed unapologetic black girl https://t.co/RlgFEbZSgg have no idea how you made me feel seein her

— Cherrelle Dirty Computer (@CherrelleSkeete) May 20, 2017

By reproducing her image you are breaking down barriers and shifting collective consciousness of what our sheroes look like

— Cherrelle Dirty Computer (@CherrelleSkeete) May 20, 2017

Thankyou if you queued patiently (sometimes in the rain) at stage door to meet me.The love has been felt

— Cherrelle Dirty Computer (@CherrelleSkeete) May 20, 2017

Of course, the show must go on – and stepping into their shoes are Jamie Glover (Harry), Emma Lowndes (Ginny), Thomas Aldridge (Ron), Rakie Ayola (Hermione), James Howard (Draco), Theo Ancient (Albus), Samuel Blenkin (Scorpius), and Helen Aluko (Rose). The new cast will be taking to the stage on May 24, and we can’t wait to see the magic that they bring to the roles.

That’s not it for the show either. It’s heading to Broadway in 2018, so audiences across the pond will get a chance to see it.

Thank you again, Noma, Jamie, Paul, Poppy, Alex, Anthony, Sam, Cherrelle, and the rest of the original cast, for bringing magic back into our hearts and onto the stage and allowing us to return, once again, to Hogwarts. We can’t wait to see what you do next.

Did You Know

Quidditch started in the 11th century at a place called Queerditch Marsh, which is not marked on Muggle maps because wizards have made the place unplottable. Originally, it was quite a crude game played on broomsticks with just the Quaffle.

Potter History

March 12, 2008 – After many rumors, Warner Bros. officially announces that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be split into two separate films.

Potter Quote

“I’m three years older than you were when you fought You-Know– Who over the Sorcerer’s Stone and it’s because of me Malfoy’s stuck back in Umbridge’s office with giant flying bogeys attacking him!”
