UPDATED: Transfiguring Adoption Names Award After Chris Rankin

by Lucy O'Shea · October 8, 2018

UPDATE (October 14, 2018):

Harry Potter costar Stan Yanevski (Viktor Krum) has joined his Weasley friend, supporting nomination and award efforts for the Chris Rankin Award for the Best Adoptive Parent contest that Transfiguring Adoption is hosting. Nominations for great adoptive parents to receive the award are being accepted through October 19, public voting will be November 1–18, and the winner will be announced during the first week of December. Stan just recently joined the efforts to support the campaign, as nominations come to a close this week. Hopefully, he will draw more participation to this fantastic cause!

The positive values and messages found in the Harry Potter series are often used to advocate for charitable causes, so it’s no surprise that wizarding world alumni are also a philanthropic bunch. Earlier this month, a nonprofit organization, Transfiguring Adoption, announced that Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley) is helping raise awareness of its magical work by lending his name to a very special award.

Through the Chris Rankin Best Adoptive Parent Award, Transfiguring Adoption aims to celebrate the “dedication and love” of adoptive parents, as well as raise awareness of their need for support. Nominations for the award are being accepted until October 19 and adoptive parents from across the United States and the United Kingdom are eligible to be nominated.

Once the public nomination closes, the nonprofit organization will choose three finalists, each of whom will be paired with a celebrity advocate for the final public voting phase. Celebrity advocates will use social media and other online platforms to encourage people to vote for their finalist, and a winner will be announced the first week of December.

**Contest NOW OPEN**
Nominations are now open through October 18th for the annual Chris Rankin Award for Best Adoptive Parent. Don’t let that unsung hero in your life go unrecognized.

Transfiguring Adoption is a magical organization that supports foster and adoptive families through a Harry Potter-based curriculum. Using Harry’s story as a starting point, the nonprofit organization develops resources and tools to help new families process and discuss adoptive children’s experiences.

Speaking about his partnership with Transfiguring Adoption, Rankin took the opportunity to not only highlight the staggering number of children available for adoption in the US and UK but also recognize the selflessness of adoptive parents:

There are more than nearly 4,000 children in the U.K. and more than 100,000 in the U.S. available for adoption. I’m proud to help shine a light on the creative and self-sacrificing heroes, adoptive parents like mine, who step up to the challenges of caring for these children on a daily basis.

Press Release

“Harry Potter” Actor Chris Rankin Aids Nonprofit in Search for Best Adoptive Parent

ORLANDO, Fla, Oct. 1, 2018—Transfiguring Adoption, a nonprofit assisting foster and adoptive families across the United States and United Kingdom, launches its inaugural search for the Best Adoptive Parent this week, with help from “Harry Potter” actor Chris Rankin. Rankin, who was adopted as an infant, is best known for his role as Percy Weasley in the “Harry Potter” films. He is an outspoken advocate for boosting adoption rates and for foster and adoptive children everywhere. Rankin says, “There are more than nearly 4,000 children in the U.K. and more than 100,000 in the U.S. available for adoption. I’m proud to help shine a light on the creative and self-sacrificing heroes, adoptive parents like mine, who step up to the challenges of caring for these children on a daily basis.”

Parents anywhere in the U.S. and U.K. are eligible for the Chris Rankin Best Adoptive Parent Award. The public may participate in both the nominations and final voting phases of the contest at transfiguringadoption.com. Transfiguring Adoption leadership volunteers will select three finalists to advance to the public voting phase, and each finalist will be paired with a Celebrity Advocate, who will use social media and other digital platforms to campaign for their finalist.

Rules are available and nominations are being accepted through Oct. 19. at the contest site, and voting by donation will run Nov. 1– Nov. 18. All proceeds support the nonprofit’s mission of providing resources, information and tools for foster and adoptive families. The contest winner will be announced the first week of December.

“We created the Chris Rankin Best Adoptive Parent Award to celebrate the dedication and love of adoptive parents while creating awareness of their need for community support, ” says Transfiguring Adoption Co-Founder Darren Fink. “Nearly every child entering foster care has suffered trauma, so it takes specialized parenting to create and maintain a new ‘family of choice.’”

Transfiguring Adoption is a nonprofit organization that provides supportive services to foster and adoptive families. Among its many services is a unique curriculum based on the “Harry Potter” books and framed around the title character’s experiences as an orphaned and adopted child who faced many unspeakable fears; new parents have found the discussion guides invaluable in helping their children process their own experiences in a non-threatening way. From their founding curriculum the organization has grown and extended its resources to include other publications, online and real-world support groups, and practical assistance for new families. For more information or to nominate or vote in the Chris Rankin Best Adoptive Parent Award contest, visit transfiguringadoption.com. See Rankin’s guest post on the TA blog for more insight on his own adoption story and the need for more foster and adoptive parents.
