Newest Trailer for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Drops

by Aly Kirk · October 10, 2019

The Boy Who Lived, as they say, lives on! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has just released a brand-new official trailer that features never-before-seen footage from the stage. If the play is anything like the gripping sneak peek, those who have yet to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are in for a very special treat.

The trailer begins, and we are immediately transported into the wizarding world in a flurry of illustrations from the original seven Harry Potter books. Almost as quickly as it begins, the commotion stops with the slam of a shutting book, but that does not mean the story ends with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

We see the grown Harry Potter with his wife, Ginny, and their young children on platform nine and three-quarters as they begin the next chapter of their lives. From there, the story only gets better. Snippets of the play flash by and we can see flurries of magic, characters dancing about the stage, and even a few battle scenes between several of the characters. The new tagline for the play, “Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places,” will give you full-on chills as dark, cloaked figures rush around our heroes. The magic is so up close and personal, it seems very real to an entranced audience. You’ll have to head to your nearest theater featuring the production to get the full effect and see how, once again, Harry Potter swoops in to save the day.

The play is currently running at the Palace Theatre in London, the location of the world premiere in 2016; the Lyric Theatre in New York, since its opening in April 2018; and the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, since its opening earlier this year. If you’re not in the area for these productions, don’t worry! Three more theaters have plans to open their shows in the coming months. Future performance locations include the Curran Theatre in San Francisco this fall; the Mehr! Theater am Großmarkt in Hamburg in spring 2020, which will be the first non-English version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; and the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto in fall 2020.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender publicly announced their admiration and appreciation for the chance to turn the next chapter of the Harry Potter series into a play when the new campaign was first launched.

We are very proud that J.K. Rowling chose to tell her eighth story on stage [sic]. Just as she created a generation of lifelong readers with the Harry Potter book series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now doing the same for theatre, with over half of our audiences worldwide being first[-]time theater-goers [sic] of all ages. There is nothing like the experience of being in a theater with a community of others, seeing and experiencing in real-time [sic] as the magic unfolds live before your eyes.

Tickets for productions in London, New York, Melbourne, and San Francisco are now available on each of the theaters’ websites.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues its celebration of global exantion [sic] with the release of a brand[-]new trailer, featuring never[-]before[-]seen footage of the award-winning international hit stage production.

As the producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, said publicly when the new campaign first launched, “We are very proud that J.K. Rowling chose to tell her eighth story on stage [sic]. Just as she created a generation of lifelong readers with the Harry Potter book series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now doing the same for theatre, with over half of our audiences worldwide being first[-]time theatre-goers [sic] of all ages. There is nothing like the experience of being in a theatre with a community of others, seeing and experiencing in real-time [sic] as the magic unfolds live before your eyes. The Boy Who Lived, lives on, and the story continues on stage [sic] across the world because, as J.K. Rowling herself said, ‘Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.’”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now playing at the Palace Theatre in London, where it received its world premiere in July 2016; at the Lyric Theatre in New York, where it opened on Broadway in April 2018; and at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, where it opened earlier this year. Upcoming productions include the exclusive U.S. West Coast premiere in San Francisco at the Curran next month; the German premiere, the first non-English[-]language production, at the Mehr! Theater am Großmarkt in Hamburg in [the] spring of 2020; and the Canadian premiere at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto in [the] fall of 2020.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage [sic]. Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany.

Receiving universal acclaim for its breathtaking magic and stage wizardry, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the most awarded play in theatre history, winning 25 major U.S. awards, with six Tony Awards including Best Play. It also won 24 major theatre awards in the U.K. and is the most awarded show in the history of Britain’s Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking nine awards including Best New Play.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter, and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and the father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son, Albus, must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child features movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music & arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions & magic by Jamie Harrison, [and] music supervision & arrangements by Martin Lowe. US Casting by Jim Carnahan, CSA.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.
