Jessie Cave’s “Sunrise” Is Available for Free Until Next Wednesday

by Dora Bodrogi · June 26, 2020

Sunrise is here again! The widely acclaimed autobiographical book, by actor, writer, comedian, illustrator, and the later Harry Potter films’ very own Lavender Brown, Jessie Cave, is available for free just until next Wednesday, courtesy of Nick Hern Books. What’s more, you can send in your questions throughout this week, and on July 1, Cave will answer them in the form of a recorded Q&A.

The publishing house is sharing free e-books as part of its weekly online reading and discussion initiative, the NHB Playgroup. Each Wednesday during the coronavirus shutdown, Nick Hern Books is allowing readers to read a play for free and send in their related questions via email, which are answered in a recorded Q&A with the authors released the following Wednesday. This week’s selected work is Jessie Cave’s Sunrise.

This week’s #NHBPlaygroup play is Sunrise by @jessiecave.

This hilarious, honest story of motherhood and moving on – published with DOODLES! – premiered @sohotheatre, and was seen @edfringe and on a UK tour.

Sunrise truly is an exquisite, candid, original, and painfully funny account of Cave’s life, first published in 2018. In the words of NHB, “Sunrise is an honest, tender-hearted and uproariously funny story about crying in the woods, sexual accidents, Harry Potter conventions and Instagram espionage – but also about motherhood and trying to get stuff done.” The hard copy as well as the e-book is also rife with full-color illustrations by Cave in her unique style that combines childlike doodles and weirdly relatable commentary on navigating adult life, which is oddly comforting even when it feels like she personally calls you out.

Sunrise is also the accompaniment to Cave’s critically acclaimed one-woman show of the same name. She performed it to great success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, on tour, and at Soho Theatre, London, which also produced her recent WIP, Cave Women, performed with her sister Bebe Cave (Victoria, Great Expectations), as well as Alfie Brown’s Imagination. You can also watch Cave’s I Loved Her show on Soho Theatre’s theater-on-demand site for a small donation with or without subtitles.

You can read Sunrise for free now in your browser on the NHB Playgroup‘s website for its series, which includes all previous recordings of author Q&As as well, or in the free Issuu app for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Once you’ve read the play, feel free to send in your questions for Cave at playgroup@nickhernbooks.co.uk by the end of Sunday, June 28. Quick, don’t miss it: Share, read, and send in your questions.
