EXCLUSIVE: Tom Felton Joins Rob Knox Documentary

by Lucy O'Shea · August 21, 2020

In 2008, Rob Knox (Marcus Belby in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) was fatally stabbed while protecting his younger brother. In the 12 years since his tragic death, his family has been working to release a documentary to honor his legacy and continue the fight against knife and gun violence in the United Kingdom.

Today, on what would have been Knox’s 31st birthday and with the documentary in the final stages of production, MuggleNet can exclusively announce that Tom Felton will appear in (K)nox: The Rob Knox Story.

The documentary aims to raise awareness of knife and gun violence in the UK by telling Knox’s story and challenging existing narratives on these types of crimes, as well as funds for arts programs for young adults through the Rob Knox Foundation.

Speaking of Felton’s involvement, documentary director Aaron Truss shared the excitement felt by the Foundation and Knox’s family:

I can now confirm that our final interview for the documentary will be with Draco Malfoy himself, Tom Felton.

Tom has been very kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to help the Rob Knox Foundation on this documentary.

(K)nox: The Rob Knox Story follows Knox’s journey as a young actor through his role as Marcus Belby in Half-Blood Prince and the night that he was killed in a knife attack in London. Felton’s interview will appear alongside contributions from other key Wizarding World figures Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn) and David Yates (director of the final four Harry Potter movies and Fantastic Beasts series), both of whom worked with Knox in Half-Blood Prince. Familiar faces from British film and TV Ray Winstone (The Departed, Beowulf), Blake Harrison (A Very English Scandal, The Inbetweeners), and Dani Harmer (Tracey Beaker, as well as an uncredited Hogwarts student in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) will also be featured alongside Knox’s family and friends.

In an interview with Sky News in the UK this morning, Colin Knox (Rob’s father) revealed that the documentary is “98% done”  and still looking for a distributor, but once that is acquired, it won’t be long before there is a release date. Footage from the documentary was shown during the interview, including clips of the interview with Broadbent, reenactment images, and news coverage from the time.

“Why are people carrying knives?”

The father of actor Rob Knox who appeared in the Harry Potter franchise, hopes a documentary about his son’s life will raise awareness of knife crime in the UK.

Truss has been amazed at the warmth shown by the Potter fandom and its continued support of the documentary and its cause:

Since I started directing this documentary in honour of my close friend, I’ve been absolutely blown away at how friendly and supportive the HP community has been.

Rob might not be here to celebrate his birthday, but you can be sure his family, friends and the HP community will be celebrating it for him – hopefully with a Slughorn pudding or two…

On Knox’s birthday, the Potter community remembers the life of a young talent that was sadly cut short, but more widely, it’s a chance to remember all those who have been affected by knife and gun violence.

According to Truss, since Knox’s murder in 2008, there have been over 2,997 deaths as a result of knife violence in the UK alone. It may be 12 years since his death, but the message of (K)nox: The Rob Knox Story remains as important as ever.
