Sorting BBC’s “Sherlock” Characters into Hogwarts Houses
One thing that Potter fans may not realize is that we role-play as one particular character on a daily basis: the Sorting Hat. It’s more than likely that you’ve sat pondering which Hogwarts Houses your friends and family (and even some of your favorite characters and celebrities) would be Sorted into. We know we have, and this time we’ve decided to Sort the characters from BBC’s Sherlock into Hogwarts Houses.
Sherlock Holmes – Ravenclaw
It’s no surprise that the consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, belongs in Ravenclaw House with his vast intelligence (in subjects he deems important), high regard for knowledge and logic, and impressive deductive skills. Throughout the show, Sherlock continually puts his life at risk in order to solve the puzzles and crimes he is faced with, showing a compulsion to figure out the “how” regardless of the consequence.
John Watson – Gryffindor
Before returning to London, Dr. John Watson was previously a British Army doctor – a profession that would have required immense courage to put himself on the front line and in the path of danger so that he could help others. Even after meeting Sherlock, John continues to show his bravery and as Harry Potter does with Ron Weasley, chooses to ally with Sherlock quickly despite others warning him against associating with him. While he may not always be as eager to “play the game,” John shows his Gryffindor recklessness in finding thrill in the adrenaline that comes with assisting Sherlock in his cases, often running headfirst into trouble without much thought in order to aid others.
Mycroft Holmes – Slytherin (Hatstall – Possible Ravenclaw)
Described as smarter than Sherlock, there is a high possibility that Mycroft Holmes could be Sorted into Ravenclaw. However, a description delivered by Sherlock himself is the reason why Mycroft would actually be Sorted into Slytherin House: “He is the British government when he’s not too busy being the British Secret Services or the CIA on a freelance basis.” This analysis of Mycroft’s character and his occupation highlights his ambition, and there are even times when Mycroft uses the power he has to intimidate and threaten others – for example, when he first meets John Watson, or with how he treats other characters, including his own brother.
Mrs. Hudson – Hufflepuff
For her patience alone, Mrs. Hudson would most definitely be Sorted into Hufflepuff House. Her ability to tolerate having someone like Sherlock Holmes as a tenant goes to show that Mrs. Hudson has the patience of a saint. In addition, Mrs. Hudson expresses great loyalty to both Sherlock and John, continually providing for them and going out of her way to be of assistance around the flat. While her significance as a character may be overlooked at times, Mrs. Hudson shows her Hufflepuff loyalty in what is perhaps Sherlock’s greatest times of need, such as in withholding Irene Adler’s phone from the American assassins.
Greg Lestrade – Hufflepuff
Anyone who knows Lestrade would most likely expect him to be Sorted into Gryffindor. However, the Sorting Hat would ultimately Sort him into Hufflepuff to credit his outstanding loyalty, a strong sense of justice, and desire to do good. Lestrade proves himself to be loyal to Sherlock and remains to date the only member of Scotland Yard who will willingly work alongside the consulting detective. His concern for his friends and protective nature shine through on multiple occasions, such as when he receives a text from Sherlock asking him to come to his aid and passes up the opportunity to close a difficult and long-running case to go help Sherlock instead.
Molly Hooper – Hufflepuff
It’s without a doubt that Molly Hooper would be Sorted into Hufflepuff, perhaps before the Sorting Hat even touches her head (like how Draco Malfoy is Sorted into Slytherin). Throughout the show, Molly displays the key Hufflepuff traits on numerous occasions, such as her kindness and loyalty to Sherlock. While Molly may have a timid nature about her, she eventually grows to become more confident as the show progresses and is fiercely protective of her friends, proving that she values loyalty above all else.
Jim Moriarty – Slytherin
For the Napoleon of crime, there is no other House for Jim Moriarty to be Sorted into aside from Slytherin, for all the stereotypical reasons. Throughout the show, Jim proves himself to be exceedingly cunning when he manipulates Molly Hooper. He feigns interest in her to get closer to Sherlock, manages to fool Sherlock, and even convinces a great number of people that he is an actor playing the role of Moriarty on Sherlock’s instruction. Additionally, he is incredibly determined to achieve his ambitious goal of beating Sherlock in their game.
