Alison Sudol Bewitches Both on Screen and in Song

by Megan Fischer · November 22, 2016

Just when you thought Alison Sudol couldn’t get any more awesome…

Sudol spoke to the Hollywood Reporter earlier this week on what it’s like making the change from an indie musician to Hollywood’s next big star.

In 2007, Sudol debuted her first album, One Cell in the Sea, under the name “A Fine Frenzy.” From 2007 until around 2015, she continued to release music, with some of her singles being chart toppers both in America and overseas. “Almost Lover” was her debut single, and it continues to be one of her most popular songs.

In 2015, Sudol stated,

I put A Fine Frenzy to bed a few years ago.

She has since decided to give music another shot and has begun songwriting again.

When Sudol became frustrated with the music industry, she began enrolling in acting classes. In her third audition, she was awarded a role on Amazon’s award-winning show Transparent.

Her connection to the Potter world started when she starred alongside Jason Isaacs (who played Lucius Malfoy in the films) in USA Network’s Dig. After meeting with a casting director in 2015, she got the role we all know and love, Queenie in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Acting, however, was not always something Sudol wanted to do or was even interested in. Her parents were both acting teachers, and she stated that it made her determined not to be an actor.

I never had any illusions about that industry. I wanted nothing to do with that heartbreak.

When asked about Fantastic Beasts, she stated,

I’ve never been in anything even remotely like this. I’ve never participated in something that was so beloved and so well known. I don’t really know what that’s going to mean, but I am just excited to go on the ride, wherever it takes me.

Sudol went on to talk about the fans of the franchise, praising their dedication to the wizarding world, and said she is excited to get to meet them and share that passion.

She has nothing but love for Queenie, saying,

When I was first auditioning, Queenie was a traditional bombshell. I never would have gotten the role if that remained the main focus, because I never saw myself as that. She’s soft and nurturing, and we need more female characters like that to show young women you can be feminine, and that you can actually be a strength.

We are certainly excited to see more of Alison Sudol, both in Fantastic Beasts and in her other projects.

What did you think of Sudol’s portrayal of Queenie?
