The BAFTA Film Awards 2021 Nominations Are Here

by Dora Bodrogi · March 10, 2021

It was one month ago that the long-listed nominees of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards were announced, including several former and present cast and crew members of the Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beasts film franchises. The final list of nominations is finally here. Let’s dig in!

It’s been a manky awards season for the Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic, Mank. While its lead star, Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), has been left off the short list, the crew may look forward to some wins. The Netflix original is nominated in the categories of Cinematography, Original Screenplay, Original Score, Production Design, Costume Design, and Make Up and Hair.

However, Mank is going up against other Potter-related nominees in several categories. The Dig, starring Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), has also been short-listed in Make Up & Hair, in Production Design along with News of the World (scored by Fantastic Beasts composer James Newton Howard), and in Costume Design together with Emma (Bill Nighy, who played Rufus Scrimgeour in the Harry Potter films) and Ammonite (Gemma Jones, who played Madam Pomfrey, and Fiona Shaw, who played Aunt Petunia) while also scoring nominations for Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film. Watch out for His House in the latter category and in Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Its star Wunmi Mosaku (Beryl in Fantastic Beasts) is also among the contenders for Leading Actress.

The Trial of the Chicago 7, which stars Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), is nominated for Best Film, Original Screenplay, and Editing. Another Round may score Director, Original Screenplay, Film Not in the English Language, or even Leading Actor by Mads Mikkelsen, who is going to take over as Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movies.

News of the World is also in the basket for Sound, Cinematography, and Original Score. Meanwhile, The Midnight Sky, whose soundtrack was composed by Alexandre Desplat (composer of the score for both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and Tenet, starring Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), Clémence Poésy (Fleur Delacour), and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory), are nominated for Special Visual Effects.

Check out the full list of nominations in all categories on the BAFTAs’ official website. The awards ceremony will take place on April 10–11, and it will be broadcast on the BBC.

Potter Quote

“You’ve picked the losing side, Potter! I warned you! I told you you ought to choose your company more carefully, remember? When we met on the train, first day at Hogwarts? I told you not to hang around with riffraff like this!”
