2021 SAG Awards Nominations, BAFTA Long Lists Announced

by Mary Wojcicki · February 6, 2021

Though awards season might look different this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, plenty of Wizarding World alumni have reason to celebrate. Both the nominations for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards (also known as the SAG Awards) and the long lists for the 2021 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) have been released.

First up are the SAG Awards, which will be held this year on Sunday, April 4. The full list of nominees includes projects with ties to a number of Wizarding World talents. In film, Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) was nominated in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his role as Herman Mankiewicz in Mank. Meanwhile, the cast of The Trial of the Chicago 7 was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, including Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander, Fantastic Beasts) for his role as Tom Hayden.

In television, two television shows featuring Wizarding World alumni were nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series: The Crown and Bridgerton. Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) has portrayed Princess Margaret on The Crown since 2019, and Freddie Stroma (Cormac McLaggen) portrays Prince Friedrich on Bridgerton.

The Hollywood Reporter additionally made note of the SAG Awards nominees who have been featured on its Awards Chatter podcast. Eddie Redmayne was featured on the podcast back in 2015.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the BAFTA long lists have been released. The Hollywood Reporter explained in its article that this is the first time that the British Academy has released a long list prior to the official nominations.

The decision to publish the nominations longlists was made as part of a major overhaul to BAFTA’s voting procedures announced last year aimed at addressing the lack of diversity at the BAFTA film awards. Within some 120 wide-ranging changes, a new longlisting initial round was introduced, resulting in three rounds of voting. Round one voting, which took place from January 12 to 26, produced the longlists in all categories being announced.

The BAFTA nominations themselves won’t be released until March 9, but the long lists seem promising. In the Leading Actor category, multiple Wizarding World alumni have been listed: Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) has been recognized for his role in The Dig, and Gary Oldman has been recognized for Mank. Mads Mikkelsen, who will be replacing Johnny Depp in the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, has also been recognized for his role in Another Round. Wunmi Mosaku (Beryl, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for His House. In the Supporting Actor category, Eddie Redmayne has been recognized for his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7.

In the Original Score category, Ammonite (Gemma Jones, Fiona Shaw), Mank, The Midnight Sky, News of the World, Tenet (Kenneth Branagh, Clémence Poésy, Robert Pattinson), and The Trial of the Chicago 7 have been recognized. The Midnight Sky and News of the World were scored by Alexandre Desplat (who composed the scores for the final two Harry Potter films) and James Newton Howard (who has composed the scores for all of the Fantastic Beasts films to date), respectively.

Beyond this, Another Round, The Dig, Mank, News of the World, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 have been put on the long list for Best Film; Ammonite, The Dig, Emma (Bill Nighy), and His House have been put on the long list for Outstanding British Film, and Another Round has been put on the long list for Film Not in English Language.

Multiple projects have received recognition in other categories, including Director, Original Screenplay, and Costume Design. The full long list for the BAFTAs is available online. The BAFTAs ceremony takes place on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

Potter Quote

“She stopped you killing me. And I’ve seen the real you, I saw you last year. You’re a wreck. You’re barely alive. That’s where all your power got you. You’re in hiding. You’re ugly, you’re foul —”
