I have long been troubled by the fact that Peter Pettigrew was sorted into Gryffindor; of course, for reasons of plot it makes sense since he needed to be close friends with the rest of the Marauders, and Hogwarts tends to be cliquey with their Houses. However, I also knew J.K. Rowling does not make decisions willy-nilly, so I still couldn’t reconcile how a character who is entirely motivated by fear could be sorted into Gryffindor.
Becoming Neville Longbottom: Most improved ~ In their seven years at Hogwarts, Neville Longbottom is clearly the most improved student of them all…. What brought about this transformation in Neville? …
In a new interview, Matt Lewis (Neville Longbottom) has spoken about meeting up with J.K. Rowling in Edinburgh, and how much he’d love to bring the well-loved Neville Longbottom back one day.
Becoming Neville Longbottom: Boggart Master… How are you going to conquer your boggart? Before you answer, consider the following…
“Give it here,” Harry called, “or I’ll knock you off that broom!”
“Oh, yeah? […] Catch it if you can, then!” he [Malfoy] shouted, and he threw the glass ball high into the air and streaked back toward the ground.
… A foot from the ground he [Harry] caught it, just in time to pull his broom straight, and he toppled gently onto the grass with the Remembrall clutched safely in his fist. – SS/PS.
If we want to become Harry Potter we have to stand up for others, not to the point of becoming bullies ourselves but to show the Nevilles that they do matter, that they don’t have to be picked on. That we are on their side even if they are a bit strange or uncool or whatever.
I know this is a topic that has been discussed before, but it’s something I find very interesting to delve into. There are so many “what ifs” that we can explore in the Potter series, but I think this is one of the biggest ones. If Voldemort had interpreted the prophecy to mean Neville and his parents, there are quite a few things that would be different about the story. You see, it’s not as simple as switching characters and leaving the story and the outcome the same. Different characters react to things in different ways and make different decisions that can completely change the course of a story.
