Rosmerta’s Dietary Cautious-Friendly Recipes

by John L. Wilda · June 23, 2020

Many of the fan-submitted recipes on MuggleNet’s “Rosmerta’s Recipes” page are allergy-friendly, either naturally or through the use of specialty ingredients such as nut milks or gluten-free flours. Sometimes, when looking for a recipe that is appropriate for a specific diet, readers are drawn to those that specifically mention they fall in line with a certain restriction. However, remember that it only takes a moment to check if a recipe you know and like is okay too.

“Rosmerta’s Recipes” has been around since 2003. Back then, it was a small web page with four products (three of which are still on the site). Now, we are up to 91 magical recipes, including classic British fare, French meals, many treats mentioned in the books or films, and drinks inspired by the theme parks. Around 30 of these recipes are allergy- and restriction-friendly.

If you’re cooking for someone who keeps their diet gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian, remember that each person does so for their own reasons. These can range from life-threatening conditions to personal beliefs. Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) shows her personal beliefs in many ways. She has been a vegetarian for most of her life and decided to transition into a vegan lifestyle around 2015.

The tricky thing about dietary restrictions is that allergens and other foods many people avoid can appear in processed foods where you may not expect them. For example, there are almost always trace amounts of nuts in chocolate products, and marshmallows are not vegetarian (gelatin is made from animals).

On the other hand, there are some products that you might not realize are gluten-free if you’re not gluten-free yourself, such as corn or rice (although the processing plant may introduce trace amounts into the grains by cross-contact). Always read labels and cook consciously when trying to accommodate someone’s dietary restrictions.

The below recipes are gluten-free (GF) and/or vegan (Vg) by means of specialty ingredients:

  • Golden Snitch Cakes (GF)
  • Mini Treacle Tarts (GF)
  • Oversize Blueberry Muffins (GF) (Vg)
  • Rum Butterbeer Cookies (Vg)

Likewise, these recipes are all naturally gluten-free and vegan:

  • Fizzing Whizbees
  • Nonalcoholic Firewhisky
  • Polyjuice Potion Popsicles
  • Pumpkin Juice
  • Pumpkin Juice by Ella
  • Pumpkin Juice by Eric
  • Pumpkin Juice by Melinda
  • Rosmerta’s Mulled Mead

Many of our other recipes are also naturally gluten-free, including the rest of the beverages. Gluten is the product of two proteins when water is added to them. These proteins are found abundantly in wheat. They also exist (in much smaller quantities) in rye, barley, and triticale and may even be present in oats by process of contamination. If a recipe doesn’t include any flour made from those grains and the other ingredients say “gluten-free” on the label, then the product should be safe.

We hope that you’ll give these recipes a try. If you do, tag us on social media and use the hashtag #RosmertasRecipes. Also, remember that anyone is welcome to submit a recipe to be featured on MuggleNet. Please read our recipe submission guidelines if you have something to share.
